Chaim Ebanks and Eric Gray have a combined experience of over 100 years between them. You can be confident your precious books will be in safe hands. Chaim says that "bookbinding gives us both pleasure and great satisfaction". That love and care translates into finished work that you will enjoy for many years.

Using traditional methods your book is restored to its original condition, with new materials, but still exhibiting that antique look and style. This is accomplished through original bookbinding methods and the Victorian tools we still use. You can see from the testimonials below that many customers comment on the antique 'look and feel' that this achieves.

Chaim Ebanks fell in love with books as a very small child, reading two or three books every week. Inquisitive as to the structure of books, he had rudimentary training, which allowed him to bind his own small books. As an adult, and running his own IT business, he took 'day release' to expand his knowledge, with tuition from the internationally known Dutch bookbinder, George Janssen. After years of tuition, he proved to be an outstanding student, producing good quality work in both binding and 'finishing' of books (the application of gold lettering and design). Chaim specialises in the repair and rebinding of old volumes, though he will also accept modern commissions.

Chaim has lectured at Exeter University on the subject “The History of the Codex System of Books and Early Writing Systems”.

What our clients say about us.

Monica Tobias-Gay - 14.07.2014 Super work, and very fast service. My 1700s book of Don Quixote now has an even longer lease of life. Very pleased, and will pass on this bookbinder to my friends.
Jenni - 14.07.2014 Exeter Bookbinders have excelled themselves in restoring a photo album from the 1930s which was found at the club in a state of disrepair. The album was falling to bits but after restoration is now looking fantastic yet retaining it's original features so important to the history of the album.
Nigel Sharp - 31.05.2014 Chaim Ebanks restored a disbound 1871 mountaineering book to a very pleasing standard and price. Very happy with his service.
G.R.T Wood - 16.02.2013 Excellent attentive service at a very reasonable price. I have no hesitation in saying that they will take the greatest care of your precious books.
